It started back in 1995 with three friends wanting to explore Dubai on foot, weaving through the creek and discovering new running routes. Three decades later, Dubai Creek Striders has grown into one of the UAE's most beloved running communities, with more than 10,000 members, a free coaching programme, and the oldest half marathon in the region.

Tell us a bit about your club – when did it start and what inspired its creation?

We started in 1995. It was started by 3 friends wanting to tour the city while running. Those days the city was quite small, mainly around the creek. They kept on exploring the town around the creek and thus found many nice running routes. They have converted many walkers and yogis enroute their running explores.

What makes your run club unique?

It’s a non-profit club, and first club registered and governed by the local authorities. All our sessions and coachings are free. All our club merch, socials, events, activities are subsidized. Our annual race is the oldest half marathon in the region.

How would you describe your community in three words?

A bit more than 3 words – Once a Strider, always a Strider

What’s a typical run session like with your club?

The Weekend Club Run – We run through the city visiting iconic areas, structures, monuments, etc. End with breakfast at a local joint.

How many members do you currently have, and what distances or types of running do you focus on?

We have more than 10,000 members. Our run distances vary from 5k midweek speed-work to 30k on the weekend.

What does the running community in Dubai mean to you?

I've made many friends in the community over the past 15 years. It's great to meet and greet so many known faces over a run at the run track any time I go. It gives me a sense of belonging.

How has your club helped bring runners together – especially new or first-time runners?

We have 8 different runs through the week in different locations. We have different pace groups and distances for the runs. This gives accessibility to the runners with varied goals and locations. Over few runs and chats through the normal 5k walk jog person is converted into a half marathon and then the rest is history. We have many runners who have started at 5km and found themselves in ultras over a few years.

Do you have any special traditions, post-run rituals or memorable community events?

We have a traditional huddle and welcome clap for all new runners. These new runners are always escorted by some experienced runner to make sure they don’t get lost in the city. Post run coffee / breakfast is a given. International marathon groups have grown through the year. Travel, stay, visit and race in the same facility is a great experience. Having groups of 20 is common. We had about 45 runners for Comrades in 2025.

What role do you think running plays in building a stronger, healthier local community?

Running is the most basic sport to start. Dubai has many awesome facilities for running. Over the years, running has become a great networking, hang out activity. Much better than meeting up in a pub, restaurant or shisha joint. Early morning runs are a great motivation to regulate the sleep habits.

How do you encourage inclusivity within your club – from beginners to seasoned athletes?

Everyone is welcome. All distances and paces are available. All sessions and coaching are FREE with no sign up process. No force to buy any merch or product.

What’s been one of your proudest moments as a club?

Representing the club in different races across the world and being known as a Strider in the local running community.

Do you have a favourite local race or route in the UAE?

Local race – DCS Half Marathon. International - Comrades

How do you think events like The Run Show can help strengthen the running community in the UAE?

Most of the running clubs are affiliated with a single brand of shoe / apparel / nutrition / hydration / recovery, etc. Having all under one roof for a specific sport will give the chance to the runners to explore other products easily. This will be a blessing for the communities.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of joining a run club for the first time?

BEWARE – It’ll change your life!!

How do you see running culture evolving in the UAE over the next few years?

The running culture growth seems to have accelerated in the past couple of years. With additional races, events, access to international races – the running culture growth will surpass any expectation.

What’s next for your club – any big goals, events or collaborations on the horizon?

We want to increase collaboration with different clubs and have cross events.
